It must be marketing week around here. Only a few hours after I hit “publish” on my developers-are-the-best-marketers post, Sony announced a completely on-target concept: including the God of War III demo on the District 9 Blu-Ray movie disc.

I’ve seen a few fairly lame attempts to market games via home video, and vice versa. Usually, it’s just a trailer for a licensed game in front of the exact DVD movie upon which the game is based, e.g., a non-interactive trailer for the Kung Fu Panda video game on the DVD movie release of Kung Fu Panda. Isn’t that a wasted effort? Are there really that many Kung Fu Panda fans out there that have no idea a video game exists?

What I like about Sony’s bundling is it demonstrates an understanding of the audience for both properties, and simply makes the introduction. I didn’t see D9 in theaters, but some pretty smart cats I know thought it was a good, cerebral sci-fi movie. Similarly, the God of War series has always appealed to a more sophisticated audience than your average brawler, with its operatic story of betrayal and redemption set against a faithfully presented backdrop of Greek myth. It stands to reason that some D9 fans love Kratos’ exploits, whether they know it or not.

On the flip side, GoW is an established series with legions of fans, and their desire to play a level or two from the long awaited series finale (before it’s available for download) might just lead them to a purchase of the District 9 Blu-Ray, even if they missed it in theaters. So, win-win for Sony, as D9 is a product of their Pictures division and GoW is an exclusive franchise that moved plenty of hardware last generation.

I’d really like to see this type of partnership explored further, especially with some less obvious (but perhaps more effective) pairings among multiple companies. How about a demo disc for Batman: Arkham Asylum with every adult size superhero costume sold at Halloween USA stores this time of year? Of course, physical media should be a non-issue here. I’m willing to bet EA Sports and Stubhub would probably hit it off, so that way everyone that prints out their ticket to an NHL game could also get a download code for the NHL 10 demo on their system of choice. The possibilities are pretty much endless here.

Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling

It makes complete sense, and I’m sure it’s a “duh” concept for anyone that works with food and beverage, CPG’s, etc. in a marketing capacity. But the sad fact of the matter is, this kind of thing hardly ever happens in the games industry.

Somewhere along the line we appropriated Hollywood’s shitty confusing approach to marketing, where the people most directly involved in the creation of a game are usually the ones least involved in marketing it. It’s tough to say how exactly this got started. After all, in the bedroom coding commodore 64 and Amiga days, pre-retail, the developers WERE the marketers, as well as the QA testers, instruction manual copywriters… all of it. Of course, “marketing” was more or less a matter of taking out an ad in the back of an enthusiast magazine and attending the odd trade show.

At any rate, big kudos to Bowling and Infinity Ward for taking the reigns themselves. I’m sure Activision would be more than happy to just line up the troops, cut a check and send them off marching in whatever direction they chose. But having the IW guys at the top of that chain has kept the promotional machine for this juggernaut of a game focused and coordinated. Most importantly, they understand the Modern Warfare audience on a much deeper level than the sum whole of any team from any agency they retain – even a videogame specialty practice.

Bowling started using Twitter to get minute details about MW2 directly to passionate fans

I can’t even begin to count how many interviews I’ve seen where a developer, hyping his newest game, blames the failure of his last one squarely on marketing, and how the team responsible either didn’t get the game, didn’t get the audience, or both. Hopefully Infinity Ward’s attitude takes hold with other AAA developers, so that excuse can finally be put to rest.

The NPD Group’s US Video Game Report for September just hit my inbox last night, and it may be an early indicator of the exciting fourth quarter predicted by some pretty smart cats. We saw increases across most categories from September ’08’s numbers, but not enough to pull the year-on-year numbers out of their recession doldrums. However, Sony’s got several reasons to smile, in spite of Halo 3: ODST nabbing the top spot on this month’s Software Top 10:

Yes, there are only two PS3 titles in the top 10 this month, but looking at this list, you can practically see the purchase behavior! Madden and Arkham Asylum both shipped to decent numbers on the PS3 in August, but not enough to overtake their respective Xbox 360 counterparts. These particular games’ second month in the Top 10, despite the PS3’s much smaller installed base, is a clear indicator of a positive trend in hardware sales for Sony. More casual gamers that only buy one or two pieces of software a year religiously get Madden, and strong word of mouth among hardcore gamers (not to mention a pretty good ad campaign) for Arkham Asylum has made that a must-have title for anyone just purchasing a current gen system. So gamers that were holding out for a price drop seem to be gravitating towards the PS3, and they’ve essentially created their own hardware bundle in the process.

The price drop and slim hardware proved to be exactly the 1-2 punch Sony needed. Take it away, NPD analyst Anita Frazier!

“Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year’s sales. This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month. This is the first month that the PS3 has captured the top spot in console hardware sales.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft rolls out a new hardware bundle or retailer discount for the holiday. This very well could be the PS3’s year.

In other news, this month’s NPD report saw Wii Fit fall out of the Top 10 for the first time since its introduction 15 months ago. Of course, it was immediately replaced in the Top 10 by Wii sports Resort. But for a $90 game to spend 15 months in the Top 10, where even a soft month has the floor somewhere around 200K units, is impressive. Just like the home crowd standing up for their starter during his 7th inning exit, I’ve got to salute Nintendo on this one. Well done.

Last week, yours truly was called upon to protect the city and county of New York from the forces of evil. Luckily, jurors get a whopping 2 hours for lunch and my local Hall of Justice is a few shorts blocks away from one of NYC’s truly hidden gems – Chinatown Fair. Once famous for its dancing, tic-tac-toe playing chicken, Chinatown Fair is the city’s last bastion of the smoke filled, dimly lit arcade scene that bore nerd havens in malls and boardwalks around the country throughout the 80s and mid 90s.

I had last been in a proper arcade sometime in college (Pinball Pete’s represent!), but arcades had begun a quick and steady descent into obsolescence in this country some years before that. Starting with the earliest consoles, each generation inched closer and closer to delivering a true arcade experience.

The Playstation/Saturn era finally delivered parity, but the home experience still came up short in perhaps the most critical area: competition. This generation’s online matchmaking took care of that, and now just about the closest thing you can find to an arcade in the States is some kind “Chuck E. Cheese for adults” nightmare with lots of bad food and fairly lame out-of-home-attraction type games.

CF's networked SFIV cabinets - the only ones in NYC?

Chinatown Fair is unapologetic in its lineup and old-school decor. The place is lined wall-to-wall with Capcom, SNK and Namco fighters. A few big cabinet driving games, light-gun shooters, shmups and the obligatory Dance Dance Revolution machines round out the collection.

The latest additions to CF are all imports, as the scene’s still vibrant across the Pacific. It was a good opportunity for me to see how arcade companies are adapting their hardware to suit more casual play styles, just like in console games.

A few driving and rhythm games at CF feature a proprietary card system that tracks players’ progress, much like a players’ club card in a casino. So after a one-time nominal purchase on the actual game cabinet – for example, a racer based on the anime Initial D – the player can insert their card into any Initial D cabinet they encounter in any arcade in the world, and they’ll be able to use the car they’ve customized on the tracks they’ve unlocked progressing through the game. It’s like having a savegame file that’s always with you, or an Xbox LIVE account that works in the arcade.

I thoroughly dug my visit to Chinatown Fair. It feels like one of the divier spots from my time in Japan. And I mean that as a huge compliment. I can understand how the arcade business model got phased out, but it’s kind of a shame that there are so few of them left for younger gamers to experience. If you happen to know of a particular good spot in your town, be sure and leave it in the comments.

As of this writing, a Wii price drop is finally, officially confirmed. And really, I think everyone saw this coming over the last few days, as some awfully official-looking channels tipped the new $200 MSRP in the US. Still no word on other territories.

Of course, a price drop is always good news for consumers in an economy like this, and Nintendo is now the first in this hardware generation to find the magic $200 mark for their full-featured SKU. Part of me still wonders if Nintendo really NEEDED a price drop this holiday, though. They’ve got a solid holiday lineup with a new, critically-acclaimed Wii Sports already on shelves and a family-friendly Mario game due out in November. Besides, the Wii flew off shelves the last 3 holiday seasons at $250.

I was actually expecting a new Wii SKU to hold the line on price, but sweeten the deal on pack-ins. Another Wii remote & nunchuck, perhaps Motion Plus add-ons or a Balance Board would add value to that $250.

Buried deep within the price drop announcement is a release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s November 15. This is big news for yours truly, as my baby daughter’s release date is November 14. A Super Mario game that allows up to four players simultaneously, the day after my family grows by one “player.” Synergy!

It’s been almost a year since I saw anything really compelling in games retail, so I was surprised to see a cool idea out of… Wal-Mart of all places. I’ve only been inside Wal-Mart a handful of times, having grown up in southeast Michigan and thus buying everything at Meijer for the first 20 years of my life. But Wal-Mart’s in-store “Family Night Center” sounds like it could solve some serious problems getting more casual gamers to warm up to purchasing more games throughout the year.

In a nutshell, it’s a section of the store that is full of products that could help plan a fun family night in, regardless of product category. So you’ll find family-friendly DVD movies right next to the Doritos right next to Scattergories. This being Wal-Mart and times being what they are, they put a $30 ceiling on everything in the section. Smart.

If this section really takes off, it could mean big things for board and video games. Settlers of Catan* is retailing for right around $30 now, and most of the games on my shelf could really use the boost that would come from being available at the world’s largest retailer.

There’s tremendous potential here for the industry to embrace. Last month, we saw Wal-Mart slash the price of Batman: Arkham Asylum at release in all of its Canadian stores to just above the $30 threshold for the Family Night Center. It was so well-received, Canadian Gamestops had to follow suit. I’m guessing this was a test from the überetailer to see how marquee games perform as a loss leader in a non-holiday part of the year.

Wal-Mart tested lower pricing for the stellar Batman:AA in Canada

New revenue streams like in-game ads and microtransactions could make it entirely reasonable for a big publisher to put out a serious title at a price point of $30 or less, if it means achieving the scale that comes with prestige shelf position inside Wal-Mart. We’ve already seen plenty of manufacturers create special versions of their product specifically to meet Wal-Mart’s pricing standards. So by the same logic, couldn’t a developer like EA put together a much less feature-rich version of their next Skate game for a lower retail price as a Wal-Mart exclusive, qualify for sale inside the Family Game Center (which no doubt boosts the hell out of sales), get a ton more customers into the game, and then reap greater awards by selling these consumers new skaters, outfits and levels a few dollars at a time? Let’s talk, guys.

*In case you missed it, be sure to check out Andrew Curry’s excellent Wired piece on Settlers of Catan. After years of reading about what a great game it is, and seeing so many outstanding videogame developers list Settlers among their greatest influences, it became my gateway into more elaborate games designed with adults in mind.

I work in marketing, and have seen my fair share of appreciation days, town takeovers, and key-to-the-city fluffy publicity stunts. I mean, just look at some of the language in Patrick’s decree! But Boston walks the walk in this case. They’ve managed to retain a healthy amount of area university grads, and stay in the conversation by nurturing hot startups (like 38 Studios and pre-Guitar Hero Harmonix) and larger studios (2K Boston). They even flirted with the idea of tax incentives for developers last summer, and will likely revisit the issue in some form in the future.

The longer this industry weathers the economic storm, the smarter state and local officials look in investing in its future for their constituents. There are some promising first steps to attract talent in Georgia, Louisiana, and my desperately cash-strapped home state of Michigan. With the right participation at the University level, those investments may bear fruit and incubate a living, breathing development community between the coasts. There are even some promising first steps being taken to organize devs in NYC. California and Washington can only satisfy the talent needs of such a robust industry for so long. Where will the next industry hotbed be?

With today’s The Beatles: Rock Band launch, I can’t help but wonder if all the cards are already on the table for what could be a very interesting Christmas’ “console war.”

Sony’s slim hardware redesign was a non-starter for me, until they blinked first and threw in a matching slimmer price point. Microsoft followed suit almost immediately, discontinuing the Pro SKU and making the Elite model their $300 go-to. Both good decisions. While the Wii’s still got them both on price*, it’s a much slimmer gap now that’s more than bridged by the feature sets.

A lot of major third party releases have been pushed back into early 2010, and the ones that are still on the calendar are mostly multiplatform – The Beatles: Rock Band chief among them. Microsoft will get another Halo title in ODST this holiday, as Playstation fans finally get their hands on Gran Turismo 5. So we’ll have (at least) one more year where these two boxes duke it out on a fairly even playing field.

Xbox still has a more cohesive online experience, but the Playstation 3’s installed base is finally at the point where you can jump into a well-populated game at any time of day. While I’m sure the price adjustment was a tough pill to swallow for Sony brass, they’re now offering the best value-for-dollar in gaming hardware (PS3 buyers get a Blu-Ray player while new Xbox 360 owners still need to cough up another $100 to make the thing wireless).

I’m looking forward to a well played, late generation holiday throwdown that will really put the consumers in the driver seat and rely heavily on Sony and Microsoft’s multichannel marketing effort, and maybe some cool pack-in deals. Game. On.

*NOTE: I know both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have limited-feature SKUs that fall below the Wii’s $250 price point, but let’s talk about the systems gamers actually want to buy here.

We finally got the Batman game we’ve always wanted, with the superb Arkham Asylum from Rocksteady dropping this week. The reviews are glowing, with some lofty comparisons and even “Game of the Year” buzz surfacing. Going back to last summer with the The Dark Knight movie, we’ve seen two projects take on the Batman license and absolutely nail it. Great! The only hiccup is DC’s completely missing the opportunity for comics sales.

Anyone that picks up and plays Arkham Asylum this week would be completely and hopelessly lost if they were to read any of the flagship Batman books on the shelf of their local comic shop this week. For the love of God, Bruce Wayne’s not even Batman right now*!

Dick Grayson and... Damian Wayne are Batman and Robin

I’m not saying they should retcon all the events of Infinite Crisis just for the sake of Rocksteady’s game, but would it have killed DC Comics to align the current story arc in the ongoing monthly bat-books with something that resembled Arkham Asylum’s continuity? I suppose it’s a bit of the tail wagging the dog, but last time I checked COMICS were facing some serious readership issues, while games have an abundance of players.

Marvel took a lot of flack for a similar issue with the core X-Men books around the release window for the first Bryan Singer X-Men movie in 2000. Only a few characters from the movie were active in the books at that time, and the ones that were looked nothing like their silver screen counterparts. The House of M has since learned their lesson, and got Spidey back in black just in time for Spider-Man 3. They even got the last few occurrences of Free Comic Book Day to coincide with the release date of tentpole summer blockbusters starring a Marvel character.

I can’t wait to see the NPD numbers on Arkham Asylum next month. I’m willing to bet at least the Xbox 360 SKU charts in the top 3. Too bad none of those buyers could sustain their Batman fix with a nice, tidy jumping-on point into monthly Batman comics.

*For all the lapsed comic book nerds reading this, Bruce Wayne is dead. In the comic book sense. As in ‘nobody every really dies in comics**’.

**The REALLY lapsed comic book nerds will recall that this phrase use to read ‘nobody ever really dies in comics except Bucky.’ But he actually came back in 2008. So, really, NOBODY dies in comics now.

Along with the usual batch of marginally interesting WiiWare titles and DSi crap, last week’s Wii Virtual Console release is a rare gem: Super Star Wars. If you missed this one back in the Super Nintendo’s heyday, be sure and give it a download. It’s completely worth the 800 Wii Points.

As with most SNES games, there may be some nostalgia clouding my memories. But as I recall, Super Star Wars is a brilliant sidescrolling action game with (believe it or not) some very well-done vehicle levels mixed in, and a finely tuned level of difficulty. The SNES certainly had its share of crappy platformers and cart racers based on less-than-stellar licenses (did somebody say Shaq Fu?) but this one is a gem.

The release of Super Star Wars comes at an interesting time for licensed IP in games. Eidos and Rocksteady Games dropped the demo for their eagerly anticipated Batman: Arkham Asylum last week, as well. In case you’ve been away for the last… 15 years or so, Batman’s historically been a poster child for terrible games based on a great license. It rose to the top of Xbox LIVE downloads immediately. Surprisingly enough, it plays exactly like a Batman game should, and is awesome. It makes you wonder how all these other development teams have gotten it so wrong on so many occasions.

Last week also saw Swedish develolper GRIN announce they were closing their offices and filing for bankruptcy. It was a short trip from the stars to the gutter for GRIN – they toiled in relative obscurity handling racing games and a few PC ports until they became critical and commercial darlings in 2008 with their faithful Bionic Commando re-imagining, Bionic Commando Rearmed.

Unfortunately for GRIN, their 2009 slate consisted solely of the true 3D Bionic Commando sequel (an iffy concept at best), and two movie licenses: Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Terminator Salvation. It’s not GRIN’s fault that both movies fell short of expectations, but it certainly didn’t help that Wanted missed its release date, launching a full 6 months after the movie left theaters. And Terminator? It might have helped GRIN’s cause had it been more, y’know… good.

Based on the strength of their licensed game, we’ll all be waiting with bated breath for what comes out of Rocksteady next. Based in large part on the weakness of their licensed games, the guys from GRIN will be looking for employment.
